The PetSafe SmartDoor Connected is the smartest electronic pet door you can buy. It connects to your home WiFi and gives you full control from the My PetSafe app — lock or unlock remotely, create custom entry/exit schedules for each pet, and get real-time push notifications whenever a pet uses the door. It works with PetSafe's collar key and the medium model also reads implanted microchips for collar-free access. The never-rust aluminum frame and dynamic weather sealing handle the elements well.

The PetSafe SmartDoor Connected separates itself from the standard PetSafe Electronic SmartDoor with one core feature set: WiFi connectivity and the My PetSafe app. Where the non-connected version simply unlocks when a collar key comes within range, the Connected version gives you full remote control. You can lock or unlock it from work, create schedules (cat gets door access from 6am–8pm; dog cannot exit after 9pm), and receive a push notification every time a pet enters or exits. For multi-pet households or owners with unusual schedules, this level of control changes the daily routine meaningfully.

The medium model adds microchip reading, which is the most significant upgrade over smaller and larger sizes. With microchip recognition, your cat or dog doesn’t need to wear a collar key at all — the door reads their implanted chip and unlocks automatically. This matters practically because outdoor cats frequently lose collars. One less collar means one less thing to replace and one less point of failure in the access system.

Installation requires cutting a hole in a door or wall, which is the biggest barrier for renters. The never-rust aluminum frame is well-suited for exterior doors, and the dynamic seal handles rain and wind adequately. Power comes from D or C cell batteries; a 6V AC adapter is sold separately for those who prefer a wired connection. There is no monthly subscription: all app features, scheduling, and notifications are included free.
