Whistle GPS Shut Down — Here's What to Do Next

January 15, 2026 6 min read PawTech Review

If you're a Whistle GPS tracker owner, the news isn't good: your device no longer works. Tractive, the Austrian GPS tracker company, completed its acquisition of Whistle in July 2025, and all Whistle tracking devices were permanently deactivated on August 31, 2025. No firmware update, no workaround — the servers are gone.

Here's everything you need to know about what happened, what your options are, and which replacement tracker we recommend based on our independent testing.

Key Date
August 31, 2025: All Whistle GPS tracking devices permanently stopped functioning. The free Tractive replacement offer expired September 30, 2025.

What Happened to Whistle?

Whistle was one of the original GPS pet tracker brands in the US, with millions of devices sold over a decade. In July 2025, Tractive — already the largest GPS pet tracker company globally — acquired Whistle's parent company.

Rather than maintaining two competing platforms, Tractive made the business decision to shut down Whistle's infrastructure entirely. The Whistle app stopped providing location data, the servers were decommissioned, and there is no path to reactivate any Whistle device.

Between July and September 2025, Tractive offered free replacement GPS trackers to verified Whistle owners. That offer expired on September 30, 2025. If you missed it, you'll need to purchase a new tracker at retail price.

Your Best Replacement: Tractive GPS Dog LTE

After testing 12 GPS dog trackers in our 2026 GPS Tracker Rankings, the Tractive GPS Dog LTE earned our #1 spot with a score of 9.3/10. It's also the most natural transition for former Whistle owners because:

Consumer Reports, Wirecutter, and Reviewed.com all independently named the Tractive GPS Dog LTE their top recommendation in 2025–2026 — a rare consensus.

Tractive GPS Dog LTE — 9.3/10

Our #1 rated GPS tracker. $55.30 device (sale, was $79) + $5/mo subscription.

What About Other Options?

If the Tractive doesn't fit your needs, here are three alternatives from our rankings:

Important: Avoid 3G Trackers

If you're shopping for a replacement, make sure you buy a 4G LTE device. The US 3G network shutdown is complete — any tracker still running on 3G is effectively dead. All five trackers in our GPS rankings use 4G LTE.

The Bottom Line

Losing your Whistle tracker is frustrating, but the silver lining is that the current generation of GPS trackers is significantly better than what Whistle offered in its final years. The Tractive GPS Dog LTE delivers better accuracy, longer battery life, and lower subscription costs than Whistle ever did.
